The Managing Partner Roundtable

Strategic Guidance. Relevant Insights.

The Managing Partner Roundtable is a peer-group network of managing partners and other law firm leaders who tap into each other’s perspectives, expertise, and strategic wisdom to:

  • Adapt to the new set of competitive pressures facing small-to-mid-sized law firms.
  • Implement appropriate revenue-strengthening strategies and tactics; and
  • Make the experience of law firm leadership more rewarding.

The Roundtable consists of managing partners and other leaders from `firms with typically 60-500 lawyers.

Program Structure

Quarterly Roundtable Meetings

Roundtable meetings occur quarterly for 75 minutes via teleconference – with the exception of the month in which a Roundtable retreat is held. The calls follow a “Mastermind” format whereby members raise in strict confidence topics of concern and relevance and seek each other’s perspectives and strategic wisdom for practical solutions.

Annual In-Person Retreat

Each year, members convene for a two-day in-person retreat. During the retreat, top thought leaders in the industry will address the challenges and opportunities inherent to law firm management. Through an interactive process, participants will identify solutions and develop strategies that improve their ability to effectively grow the firm.

Agenda for Upcoming Programs

Q1 Roundtable Discussion: Managing Talent Acquisition Risks

March 31, 2020

Presented by Michael A. Ellenhorn, Founder & CEO of Decipher Global

Facilitated by David Ackert, President of Ackert Inc.

Law firms frequently look to increase scale in an effort to bolster profits and lower platform costs. Such efforts frequently manifest themselves in more active lateral acquisition strategies. In that light, we will examine the fundamental economics and risks of talent acquisition. We will explore current market trends, the real cost of a failed lateral partner hire, the important link between talent acquisition and business development, as well as a number of straight-forward solutions to these pressing challenges.

Q2 Retreat: Los Angeles

June 25 & 26, 2020

Members will gather in person to discuss issues related to the following presentations:

Compensation Tools to Support Senior Partner Transition and Client Succession

As firms face an ongoing wave of partner retirements, law firms must develop the tools necessary to effectively address senior partner transitions and to best support client succession. During this session, we will discuss best practices in managing partner retirements and phase downs, compensation during transition, and managing performance and contributions of partners in transition to retirement.

Enhancing Client Loyalty

Discover the techniques your partners can employ to deepen their relationships with key clients and defend against the business development overtures of competing law firms. Understand how to adapt the fundamental techniques that we employ in our personal, face-to-face interactions to virtual interactions.

Bolstering Firm Culture in a Time of Uncertainty

An ALM/Decipher joint reports that an estimated $17.1B changed hands with lateral moves from 2014-2018. A strong culture at your firm is the best defense against competitors who would seek to poach lateral talent or threaten your firm’s autonomy. In this segment of our retreat, we will hear from industry experts on techniques that reinforce cultural stability within your firm and help you defend your autonomy.

Business Development and the Art of Persuasion

This interactive session brings to life the decision-making process and the neuro-psychology behind liking and trust. We will apply these principles to law firm business development and client service.

“The Roundtable provides thought-provoking and informative, top-tier presentations from consultants experienced with law firms and their challenges as well as candid group discussions from peers at like-minded and situated firms. MPR is a productive forum for exploring and advancing law firm management strategies, particularly as to business development and marketing.”
Roger Aksamit
Managing Partner, Houston Office, Thompson Knight
“Because the marketing partner role lends itself to a certain degree of isolation, it has been very helpful to interface with peers at other firms. I have learned a great deal from their insights and initiatives.”
Andrew Apfelberg
Partner, Greenberg Glusker
“I find the Roundtable discussions to be consistently helpful – they are focused, productive, and they force me to make marketing a high priority. The annual retreat is the best of its kind, with candid dialogue among the members and genuine thought leadership from the guest speakers.”
Allison Prince
Director, Goulston & Storrs

The annual membership fee is $5,000 per year, which covers the cost of food, beverages and speaker fees at our annual retreat as well as facilitation of the conference calls.
